Murshidabad, October 13, 2026: A joint operation by Nabagram police and the Kolkata Army Intelligence unit has resulted in the arrest of a man in West Bengal's Murshidabad district for allegedly impersonating a senior Indian Army officer and collecting money by promising defense jobs.
The accused has been identified as Tarun Das, a resident of Sagardighi. He was apprehended late on Sunday night, October 11, in the Nabagram police station area and was produced before the Lalbagh Sub-Divisional Court on Monday, where police sought a 10-day custody period to investigate the racket and any possible associates.
According to police and Army Intelligence sources, Das routinely posed as a Lieutenant Colonel from the Para Special Forces of the Indian Army and a senior officer of the Military Intelligence wing. He moved around different localities wearing a full Army uniform, carrying fake identity cards and forged documents, and traveling in a white four-wheeler fitted with "Government of India" stickers on the front and rear. Investigators noted that he used this high-ranking persona, along with walkie-talkies and other equipment, to intimidate people and gain their trust before promising them armed forces jobs in exchange for large sums of money.
